Historic Yale-Harvard Game Weekend Ends with Class of ‘98 Tailgate Win!

DogBy Reggie Solomon, ES’98

Yale-Harvard weekend was not only historic, it was truly awesome!.

This was the first time since 1968 that both teams came to the Bowl with undefeated seasons. This historic matchup generated intense pre-game interest and drew alumni near and far from both universities – including U.S. Senators Edward Kennedy (D-Mass) and Charles Shummer (D-NY).

But I digress; let’s set the stage. If you were anywhere near Grand Central Station in New York, you probably know about the unbelievably long lines to get tickets and the standing-room only trains that left the Metro-North station on the hour beginning 5:00 p.m. Friday evening until noon on Saturday morning.

Entire passenger cars were transformed into Yale and Harvard rally vehicles. On Game day, throngs of alumni walked all the way from the train station to the Yale Bowl when taxis and shuttles could not accommodate the massive crowds.

Game1For those getting in Friday night, the Pre-Tailgate at BAR proved to be a great pizza and cocktails filled event. Several 98ers were spotted showing out on the dance floor. One especially-spirited 98er even organized a last-minute meet up at Toads on Saturday night following the game.

But the crowning jewel of the weekend was the Y98 tailgate.

Amy Terry Sheehan, JE’98, chaired this year’s Yale-Harvard tailgate, and she and her committee of Reunion volunteers put on a tremendous tailgate party. 98ers and other nearby-class moochers enjoyed pomegranate wheat brew, yummy snacks and lots of 98 love (and yes; there were even baby wipes available as promised). My special favorite were the individually wrapped blue bags of candy imprinted with Reunion teaser tags (Thanks Mia – we know you don’t want to see candy or curly ribbon ever again). ;-)

Game2Many thanks go to the entire tailgate team of Eunice Park, PC’98, Brian Park, BK’98, Mia Park, Colin Sheehan, Jessica Jewell Ogilvie, JE’98 and Tim Ogilvie. Not only did these enthusiastic volunteers prepare everything for the tailgate, they arrived at the Yale Bowl at 8:00 a.m. to be sure the Class of ’98 had prime tailgate real estate for you. Our caps go off to you.

And speaking of caps, if you missed the Game, you also missed the opportunity to pick up a Y98 Skull Cap that were available for sale at the game as a special treat. Game3The hats are blue on the outside with warm black lining and are really cute. We only have 20 caps left. If you’d like one, just contact me and I’ll mail you one. They’re only $10 (plus 2 bucks for shipping), and we’ll be giving a few away over the next few months to some lucky 98ers.

Check out photos from the tailgate here, as well as on the Yale ’98 Facebook page.
